Gyökeres enjoyed a breakout year under Amorim, finishing as Liga Portugal’s top scorer with 39 goals in all competitions.
Speaking to France Football, the Swedish forward expressed his gratitude: “The style of play we had under him suited me perfectly.”
Amorim’s Sporting claimed back-to-back league titles for the first time in 71 years, with Gyökeres scoring 29 goals in the league.
“That’s an incredible achievement. Ruben Amorim played a big part in that. I can’t thank him enough,” Gyökeres said proudly.
The former Coventry City forward joined Sporting in 2023 and quickly became a key figure in Amorim’s high-tempo attacking system.
Amorim left Sporting in November 2024 to take over at Manchester United, despite the club sitting top of the league.
“It was a shock,” Gyökeres admitted. “I’ve never seen a coach leave mid-season when things were going so well.”
Gyökeres says he understands Amorim’s decision but was caught off guard by the timing and circumstances of the move, reports ESPN.
The 27-year-old is now heavily linked with Arsenal, who are reportedly closing in on a €65 million summer transfer deal.
