UEFA Issue Chelsea Statement Following Champions League Ban Threat

UEFA have reportedly released an important statement regarding Chelsea’s situation after threatening the Blues with severe Champions League sanctions.

The Club World Cup winners reached a settlement deal in July after being fined a total of £27 million for violating UEFA’s regulations on football earnings and squad cost ratio.

In a statement released afterwards, Chelsea said: “Chelsea FC greatly values its relationship with UEFA and considered it important to bring this matter to a swift conclusion by entering into a settlement agreement.”

According to Sky Sports as reported by Sport Bible, as part of the deal, Chelsea would only be allowed to register new players for their Champions League squad if their transfer expenses were covered by the sale of players who played for the team that won the Conference League the previous season.

Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Noni Madueke were all sold to help reach a player sales record of £314 million.

As a result, UEFA were satisfied and new players Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, and Jorrel Hato were able to register for the Champions League without any problems.

In a statement, UEFA said: “The squad list submitted fulfilled the criteria of the settlement agreement and it was therefore already reviewed and approved before publication on UEFA’s website.”
