On Sunday, President Donald Trump commemorated the one-year anniversary of a failed assassination attempt by attending Chelsea’s overwhelming FIFA Club World Cup final victory against Paris Saint-Germain.
Following the match, the president joined the players on the field to applaud the tournament’s top performers, present PSG players with runner-up medals, and hand Chelsea the championship trophy.
“It was an upset today, I guess,” Trump told reporters after returning to Washington following Chelsea’s win. “But it was a great match.”
Trump and first wife Melania Trump were greeted with shouts as they arrived at MetLife Stadium, just in time for Robbie Williams and Laura Pausini’s pre-match performance. When the president appeared momentarily on the stadium’s mega-screen, he received a few boos.
The president waved to the audience and pumped his fist as he and his entourage arrived in the stadium’s VIP box, where they watched the game alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino and his wife, Leena Al Ashqar. According To sdcp sports.
Other visitors to the president’s suite were Attorney General Pam Bondi, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, NFL legend Tom Brady, and media magnate Rupert Murdoch.
In just over a year, MetLife Stadium will host the 2026 World Cup final.
Chelsea of the English Premier League thwarted PSG’s effort to win its fourth major trophy of the season, exactly 100 days after the club won Ligue 1 on April 5. The Paris team won the Coupe de France by defeating Reims 3-0 on May 24, and then dominated Inter Milan in the Champions League Final seven days later.

The match on Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of Trump’s survival of an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, while running for president.
“It remains my firm conviction that God alone saved me that day for a righteous purpose: to restore our beloved Republic to greatness and to rescue our Nation from those who seek its ruin,” Trump said in a statement posted Sunday night after returning to Washington.
He also praised medics, first responders, and rallygoers for directing other attendees to safety, stating, “These men and women arrived at the rally grounds as ordinary Americans, but left as heroes.”
