According to US President Donald Trump, Russia’s potential participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup could serve as a “incentive” to put an end to the war in Ukraine.

Following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA banned the Russian national football team from participating in international tournaments.
Russia will not participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, in accordance with current regulations.
However, Trump claimed that Russia’s return to the competition may put an end to the conflict in Ukraine during the first meeting of his administration’s working group to be ready for the 2026 World Cup.
The USA President, who is seated next to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, claimed he was unaware that Russia had been barred from the competition, reports UNN.
That’s true. They are currently banned from playing, but we hope that something will happen and peace will come, and Russia will be allowed to compete again, Infantino said.
Trump said: “It’s possible. It could be a good incentive, couldn’t it? We want them to stop. We want them to stop. Five thousand young people are killed every week – you can’t even believe it.”
