Midfielder Federico Valverde was the star of the night after scoring a first-half hat-trick that put the Spanish giants firmly in control.
Spanish press split on Alexander-Arnold performance
Despite the convincing result, Spanish newspapers had differing opinions on Alexander-Arnold’s display, particularly his defensive battle with City winger Jeremy Doku.
Spanish outlet AS described the England international as the “weakest link” in Madrid’s defence, claiming he struggled to deal with Doku’s pace during the first half.
According to the report, Valverde often had to provide support on the right side as Doku repeatedly attempted to exploit the space behind the full-back, reports Liverpool.
However, other publications offered a more balanced assessment. Spanish newspaper Sport gave Alexander-Arnold a six out of ten rating and praised his contribution in building attacks from the back.
The report noted that while he had difficulties defensively early in the match, his performance improved significantly after the break as Doku’s influence began to fade.
Another Spanish outlet, Marca, also handed the defender a six out of ten rating, highlighting the same early defensive struggles but acknowledging his attacking contribution during Madrid’s comfortable victory.
