Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison will miss several months of the 2025-26 season after suffering a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
The club confirmed that Maddison ruptured the ACL in his right knee during Spurs’ pre-season 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in South Korea.

The 28-year-old was stretchered off in visible pain after collapsing awkwardly, and scans later confirmed the extent of the serious knee injury.
Tottenham stated that Maddison will undergo surgery “in the coming days,” followed by a long rehabilitation process expected to keep him sidelined for months.
Head coach Thomas Frank described the injury as “brutal,” especially since it affected the same knee Maddison injured at the end of last season.
Spurs Hit By Injury Crisis Ahead Of 2025-26 Campaign
The timing couldn’t be worse for Spurs, who are now without a natural creative midfielder heading into the start of the 2025-26 season.
According to ESPN, Dejan Kulusevski is also set to miss early fixtures due to a separate knee injury, leaving the squad short on attacking options.
Tottenham had targeted Morgan Gibbs-White as a potential reinforcement, but he recently extended his contract at Nottingham Forest, ending the transfer pursuit.
Without Maddison, Spurs face a tactical reshuffle, with limited midfield creativity and mounting pressure on other players to step up creatively.
Tottenham issued a statement wishing Maddison a “full and speedy recovery,” pledging full support throughout his surgery and recovery journey.
