Former Liverpool Star Touted As Simeone Replacement

Former Liverpool and Chelsea striker, Fernando Torres has reportedly been identified as the potential successor of Diego Simone later in the future.

Simeone openly acknowledged that he was overcome with relief following Atletico Madrid’s victory on Saturday, their first of the new Liga season.

Following the 2-0 victory over Villarreal, the Rojiblancos manager acknowledged, “It wasn’t just another day, after only two points from three matches.”

The pressure on Simeone to deliver in order to win a major trophy for the first time since the incredible Liga title win in 2020–21 has also increased due to a second consecutive summer spending spree. For the club’s legendary coach, this campaign feels like a make-or-break situation.

But who could take his place if he were to step down sometime between now and the upcoming season?

According to Simeone’s former assistant coach German Burgos, there’s only one possible choice. “Fernando Torres,” the Argentine told MARCA only last week, “he’s ready to do it.”

The retired striker had agreed to take charge of the Rojiblancos’ Under-19 team after two stints with the capital club during his playing career (albeit he was initially listed as the assistant because he had not yet received all of the necessary badges from UEFA).

One Of The Most Successful Players In Atleti’s History

An academy graduate who grew into one of the most feared forwards in international football, Torres was one of Atleti’s most well-known and successful pupils.

However, many were surprised by his official entry into the coaching profession, despite the fact that he had worked in the youth sector the previous season.

Torres said that he wasn’t among the players who always intended to become a coach. He never gave much of what he had learnt in the training sessions much thought as a youngster.

He only felt the need to pay closer attention to what he was being told to do and why as he grew older.
