Barcelona Star Undecided On Surgery Amid Conservative Treatment Not Working

Barcelona goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen reportedly continues to suffer from chronic back issues.

Despite this, the German goalie has not yet made up his mind about having surgery because the club have not been satisfied with the conservative course of treatment he is currently taking.

It should be mentioned that Ter Stegen will not be playing for Barcelona on their preseason tour. Since the team started getting ready for the upcoming season on July 14, he has not been training with the team.

The 33-year-old is still experiencing back pain, and there isn’t a definitive remedy in place.

According to Barca Universal, surgery is still an option, the seasoned shot-stopper is currently taking his time to decide what to do next.

Meanwhile, Flick has already stated that Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny will share goalkeeping responsibilities with the first team in 2025–2026.

Ter Stegen will drop in the hierarchy if he keeps having fitness issues, according to this decision, which validates the new goal hierarchy.

His international career is also affected by this circumstance. The Germany international will require consistent playing time to guarantee his spot in the national team roster as the 2026 World Cup draws near.

He could miss up to four months of action if he chooses to have surgery now, which would make it even more difficult for him to be selected for the tournament.

Surgery would also relieve some of Barcelona’s financial strains, based on the club’s perspective.

La Liga financial fair play regulations would enable Barça to release 80% of Ter Stegen’s salary in the event of his long-term absence, allowing the team more leeway in their wage scale.

The Blaugrana could easily register new signings in this way as well.
