Television Cameras Capture Liverpool Midfielder In Tears Following Portugal’s Defeat

Dominik Szoboszlai of Liverpool broke down in tears after Hungary’s 3-2 World Cup qualifying defeat to Portugal.

According to Origo Sport, the Hungarian captain was seen on television sobbing and apologizing to fans after his mishandled pass resulted in Joao Cancelo scoring the winning goal in Budapest.

With the game knotted at 2-2 in the dying minutes, the midfielder sought to reach Anfield teammate Milos Kerkez, only to have his pass intercepted.

Portugal punished the error immediately, with Cancelo scoring to secure victory and leave Szoboszlai devastated at the final whistle.

According to the Hungarian site, the 24-year-old hid his face in his shirt and couldn’t bring himself to confront the reporters afterward, a rare occurrence for a player who is normally the first to speak after a match.

Instead, television cameras showed him being consoled by goalkeeper Balazs Toth and mouthing apologies to the spectators in the stands.

For us, it serves as a reminder of the strain our No. 8 faces when serving his country, when he is captain and the focal point of their team.

Liverpool have already bought Florian Wirtz for a record sum to share some of the creative responsibilities at Anfield, but Szoboszlai remains vital to Arne Slot’s plans.

Why it matters for Liverpool’s season

This is not the first time our team has faced emotional challenges during the vacation. Virgil van Dijk slammed his Dutch teammates earlier this week following their victory against Lithuania.

The hope is that Szoboszlai’s suffering does not last long, since Liverpool will need his energy and leadership as we continue our title defence.

He has recently excelled at right back, and his international boss believes he can also thrive in a defensive midfield role.

Wherever Slot chooses our No.8 to play, he must put this setback behind him and focus on helping Liverpool preserve our lead at the top of the league.
