The 28-year-old forward and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed when their Lamborghini crashed and caught fire after a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle in the Zamora region.
Spanish authorities confirmed both men died at the scene.
As tributes pour in from across the football world, Nunez shared his sorrow on Instagram with a moving message and two emotional photos.
One showed Jota replacing him during a match, while the other captured a moment from training. Nunez wrote: “There are no words of comfort for so much pain.
I will always remember you with your smile, as a good companion on and off the field.”
He added: “I send all my strength to his family. From where he is, I’m sure he will always be with you—especially his wife and three children. Q.E.P.D Diogo y Andre.”
Jota and Nunez were not only teammates but close colleagues, having shared the pitch for Liverpool 51 times, reports Daily Star.
Their connection extended to 95 shared matchday squads during their time together at Anfield.
