Simeone Apologises To Vinicius, Perez Over Super Cup Semifinal Stunts

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has publicly apologized to Real Madrid attacker Vinicius Jr. and president Florentino Perez in an interview with the media prior to Rojiblancos’ Copa del Rey match against Deportivo la Coruna.

This follows the drama surrounding the two capital clubs’ Spanish Super Cup semifinal match, in which Simeone was seen verbally taunting Vinicius from the sidelines.

The Argentine coach continued to make remarks about the Brazilian attacker being jeered and yelled by Santiago Bernabeu supporters during recent games.

He also implied that Perez would dismiss him at the end of the current season.

“Florentino is going to fire you, remember what I’m telling you,” he said to the forward.

The player and Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso both reacted angrily, and the team believed that the Atletico manager had gone too far with his theatrics.

Simoene Finally Apologises

According to Madrid Universal, after giving it some thought for a few days, Simeone has now publicly apologized for his actions, saying:

“I would like to apologise to Mr Florentino and Mr Vinicius for the incident they witnessed. It was wrong of me to put myself in that position and I accept that it was wrong.”

However, he made it apparent that he was merely expressing regret and not requesting pardon, saying:

“I apologise, but I do not ask for forgiveness. I have nothing more to add.”
