Ex-Man United Star Told To Change Name On Back Of His Shirt After Joining New Club

Former Manchester United defender, Marcus Rojo has reportedly been told by his new club, Racing Club to change the name on the back of his shirt.

Rojo was recruited by Louis van Gaal for £16 million after guiding Argentina to the 2014 World Cup final and spent seven years at Old Trafford. Following his departure from United in February 2021, this is his second permanent move.

The former Sporting Lisbon player, who could play left-back or in the middle of defense, was an attractive option for a number of managers but was never a consistent starter and had injuries ruin his United career.

Rojo Left Man United For Boca Juniors

Following his departure Old Trafford, Rojo joined Boca Juniors. He played for the Argentine giants for four controversial years before his contract was canceled this week.

Now the 35-year-old has joined Racing Club – but there’s a catch. Independiente, the club’s fiercest opponents, are known as “El Rojo,” or “The Reds.”

According to The Mirror, Racing Club executives requested that Rojo remove his last name from the back of his No. 6 shirt in order to prevent their rivals from being promoted. Instead, it reads ‘Marcos R.’.

Compared with his last few weeks at Boca, Rojo will feel considerably more accepted at Racing Club. After Miguel Angel Russo was hired as manager in June, he failed to show up for any Boca games and was eventually barred from the dressing room.

Rojo made his debut for Racing Club immediately, playing the last nine minutes as they lost their Copa Libertadores round of 16 first leg away from home on Tuesday against Uruguayan powerhouses Penarol 1-0.
