James progressed through Chelsea’s academy system and made his senior debut in 2019, quickly establishing himself as a key player.
Since breaking into the first team, the defender has made 225 appearances for the Blues across all competitions.
Chelsea captain rewarded with new long-term agreement
The 26-year-old is reportedly the club’s highest-paid player, earning approximately £250,000 per week under the improved contract terms.
His new agreement is believed to maintain an incentive-based structure tied to both individual performances and Chelsea’s overall achievements.
James has started 19 of his 26 appearances in the Premier League this season.
Despite several injury setbacks in recent seasons, the defender has returned strongly and remains an important figure in Chelsea’s squad.
He underwent surgery in December 2023 to resolve a recurring hamstring injury that disrupted multiple campaigns, reports BBC.
James has also demonstrated versatility this season, featuring effectively at right-back and occasionally moving into midfield roles.
The defender has developed into a strong leader since being named Chelsea captain three years ago.
He previously helped the club win the UEFA Champions League in 2021.
James said extending his contract was a proud moment, insisting Chelsea is the place where he wants to spend his peak years.
