former Real Madrid player Gareth Bale, has commented on Los Blancos’ close 0-1 UEFA Champions League loss to Liverpool, providing a critical evaluation of both the team’s performance and Xabi Alonso’s early tenure as manager.
Thibaut Courtois played a major role in keeping Real Madrid in the match, thus the outcome at Anfield was difficult for them to accept.
Real Madrid demonstrated a great deal of discipline and structure despite the loss, making it necessary for Liverpool to rely on a single goal to win.
In an interview with CBS Sports Golazo (via AS), Bale said that he had higher expectations for the last third.
“Neither Vinicius nor (Kylian) Mbappe worked their magic and returned to the game in the last third.
The Welshman remarked, “It was a little disappointing that we didn’t really see the quality that we expect from Real Madrid players in that final third.”

Why were they ineffective?
Bale’s argument was supported by the statistics. Mbappe completed all five of his dribbles but was unable to test the Liverpool goalkeeper with any of his three attempts, while Vinícius generated one noteworthy opportunity but failed to record a single shot on target.
When asked why the pair was so unsuccessful, Bale provided an honest yet intelligent response that shed light on Madrid’s tactical balance.
“It is frustrating. Perhaps that simply complicates everything. Sometimes all you have to do is push the ball forward and test the defender.
They were easily the fastest players on the field. Only they can answer those questions.
“Perhaps they don’t do it because there is no one else in the box waiting for the crosses.” Maybe you need the ‘9’ reference point, which complicates things a little.”
The former Madrid player also emphasised the importance of player management at the club, which he believes Xabi Alonso knows perfectly.
“I believe everyone understands that at Real Madrid, it is sometimes more about managing the players than just the tactics.
I’m sure Xabi is aware of this, given his extensive experience as both a player and a coach,” he added.
