Real Madrid failed to return to the top of the Spanish league on Sunday, drawing 1-1 with relegation-threatened Girona. Kylian Mbappé converted a penalty in the 67th minute at Montilivi Stadium, after Azzedine Ounahi put the hosts ahead in the 45th. Mbappé, who scored four goals against Olympiakos in the Champions League midweek, came close to winning it for Madrid with a right-footed drive from near the penalty spot in stoppage time.
“I liked how the team reacted, even though it wasn’t enough to get the win,” Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso remarked. “We improved in the second half and had a chance to win from behind. We couldn’t finish the opportunities we generated.” According To Sports NDTV.
Madrid argued that it should have received a penalty in the 80th minute for a challenge on Rodrygo.
Madrid drew for the third time in a row, having lost the league lead to Barcelona 3-1 on Saturday. Barcelona is one point ahead of Madrid after 14 games.
Girona, ranked 18th, has won only one of its last six league games.

Alberto Moleiro scored five minutes into stoppage time to help third-place Villarreal extend their league winning streak to five games with a 3-2 triumph over Real Sociedad.
Villarreal led 2-0 before the hosts responded with goals in the 60th and 87th minutes.
Moleiro scored late in the game with a shot from the edge of the box.
Villarreal is one point behind Madrid and one point ahead of fourth-place Atletico Madrid, which defeated last place Oviedo 2-0 on Saturday.
Sociedad, ranked ninth, had won three of its last four games.
Real Betis defeated Sevilla 2-0 in the Seville derby, thanks to second-half goals from Pablo Fornals and Sergi Altimira.
