Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Alvaro Carreras from Benfica on a reported fee of €50 million.
The 22-year-old played in Madrid’s academy for three years before joining Manchester United in 2020.
The defender is Los Blancos’ most recent defensive addition. The club have already announced the arrival of right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and center-back Dean Huijsen.
The aim is to create a new defensive lineup in preparation for the Club World Cup this summer, where they were defeated by Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals.

After losing the Copa del Rey final, losing to Barcelona in La Liga, and crashing in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, Madrid finished the season without a major trophy for the first time since 2021.
According to the ESPN, Carreras was Madrid’s first choice to bolster their left-back position, where neither Fran García nor Ferland Mendy, who has been plagued by injuries, impressed last season.
During his time at the Madrid academy, he played alongside another young player, Raúl Asencio, before deciding to join United.
He had loans at Preston North End and Granada during his four years in Manchester before joining Benfica on a one-year loan with a permanent option.
With 32 appearances in Portugal’s Primeira Liga and 10 Champions League games, the Spain under-21 international enjoyed an incredible 2024–25 campaign.
Real Madrid will be looking to wrestle back their Laliga and Champions League titles from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain respectively and the addition of Carreras will be very crucial in this mission.
