At just 16, Yamal has already become a fan favorite, impressing coaches and fans alike with his skill, vision, and creativity.
Barcelona even handed him the number 10 shirt, previously worn by club legend Lionel Messi, raising expectations for the youngster’s future.
However, Manchester City boss and former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola advises caution when making direct comparisons to Messi’s greatness.
Speaking to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Guardiola said Yamal should be allowed time to grow without overwhelming pressure or labels.
“We should let Lamine Yamal carve his own path,” he said, encouraging people to wait before declaring him Messi’s successor.
Guardiola added: “The fact that he’s compared to Messi is a huge compliment. It’s like comparing a painter to Van Gogh.”
He believes the teenager’s raw ability is evident, but warned that focus and consistency will determine Yamal’s long-term success, reports Sempre Barca.
Yamal’s recent underwhelming performance against Vissel Kobe shows he still has much to learn before the new season begins.
With discipline and the right mindset, Yamal can reach elite levels—provided he stays grounded and avoids early distractions.
