Pep Guardiola Compares Man City Star To Lionel Messi After Champions League Win

Pep Guardiola has once again compared one of his Manchester City stars to Lionel Messi — but this time, it’s not Erling Haaland.

Following City’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Villarreal on Tuesday night, the Spanish coach heaped huge praise on Bernardo Silva for his all-round display and stunning headed goal.

City took control early on when Haaland opened the scoring from close range, extending his incredible record to 12 consecutive games with a goal across all competitions.

Guardiola Says Bernardo Silva Is “Like Messi”

Bernardo Silva doubled City’s lead before half-time with a powerful header from Savinho’s cross, sealing all three points in Spain.

After the match, Guardiola compared the Portuguese star’s technique to that of Lionel Messi.

“I remember Messi — it’s like a hammer in the neck,” Guardiola told reporters. “They are small but have amazing heading technique. I’m really pleased for Bernardo.”

The win was City’s third straight in all competitions, leaving them fifth in the Champions League group and in a strong position to advance, reports Team Talk.

However, Guardiola also voiced concern about mounting midfield injuries. Rodri, Nico Gonzalez, and Mateo Kovacic have all faced setbacks, forcing the manager to consider signing reinforcements in January.

Despite the fitness issues, Guardiola praised his team’s energy and focus, insisting the “vibe is good” as City chase another deep run in Europe — led by a Messi-like Bernardo Silva.
