Omar Marmoush injured his knee on international duty, causing Manchester City to face another injury scare ahead of Sunday’s Etihad derby against Manchester United.
The 26-year-old sustained the injury four minutes into Egypt’s World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso after being hit by a powerful challenge. He attempted to continue but was replaced after nine minutes of the goalless draw due to a “knee ligament bruise” as explained by the Egyptian FA.
Marmoush started City’s past two games before the international break, but his injury puts him in danger for the match against United this week. The derby kicks off this week for the Blues, who will host Napoli at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday and travel to Arsenal the following weekend.

Marmoush was scheduled to have a scan in Cairo this morning, after returning from Burkina Faso with his teammates. When he returns to Manchester, he will be checked by City’s medical experts.
According to an Egyptian FA statement on X, “Dr. Mohamed Abou El-Ela, the doctor of Egypt’s national football team, confirmed that Omar Marmoush suffered a knee ligament bruise during today’s match against Burkina Faso in the eighth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.” The player will be scanned upon his arrival in Cairo on Wednesday morning.”
Marmoush joined City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January for £59 million and has scored eight goals in 28 appearances. He started the games against Tottenham and Brighton on the left wing, replacing Jeremy Doku in the lineup.
Rico Lewis and Nico O’Reilly withdrew from England Under-21 service, however Rayan Ait-Nouri remained with Algeria.
Pep Guardiola will attend his pre-United Nations press conference on Friday, where he will deliver an update on his team’s condition.
