Nottingham Forest Release Shocking Statement After Taiwo Awoniyi Was Placed In An Induced Coma

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi underwent ‘urgent surgery’ on a ruptured intestine after crashing with a goal post in Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday.

Awoniyi, 27, was placed in an induced coma, though various sources suggest the striker’s life is not endangered and Sky Sports believe the coma is only to ‘restrict his mobility and maintain his heart rate’ following the emergency surgery.

After receiving extensive on-field treatment, the Nigerian striker was permitted to play despite his obvious injury, reports NBC Sports.

Following the game, additional tests were performed by the medical staff, and Awoniyi was sent to the hospital for surgery.

In a subsequent statement, Forest confirmed Awoniyi’s condition and insisted that the incident in question was related to the much discussed on-field incident with manager Nuno Espirito Santo and owner Evangelos Marinakis.

“Nottingham Forest can confirm that Taiwo Awoniyi is recovering well so far following urgent surgery on a serious abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City.

“The seriousness of his injury is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game, and why a player’s health and well-being must always come first.
