Mourners To Gather For Liverpool Footballer’s Wake In Portugal

On Friday morning, mourners are expected to gather in Portugal to remember Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota, according to a local parish priest.

The 28-year-old father of three, who had married his long-term fiancée Rute Cardoso only 11 days before, perished in a car accident in Spain with his brother Andre Silva after a Lamborghini they were driving went off the road and burst into flames due to a suspected tire rupture.

On Thursday at 12.40 a.m., the pair were discovered dead after a crash on the A-52 in Palacios de Sanabria near Zamora.

Jose Manuel Macedo, parish priest at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in Sao Cosme, told the PA news agency in a translated message that the brothers’ wake will be held at 8 a.m. local time at the neighboring Capela da Ressurreicao, followed by their funeral at the Igreja Matriz at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot stated that the team is in a “state of absolute shock.”

“Diogo was not just our player,” he explained.

“He was loved by all of us.

“I could say a lot about what Diogo added to our team, but the truth is that everybody who watched him play could see it. Hard labor, desire, devotion, high quality, and goals.

“The essence of what a Liverpool player should be.”

According to Slot, the player “never sought popularity” but acquired it regardless and was a friend to everyone, able to make others feel good about themselves “just by being with them”.

“I know you will always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.”
