Inter Miami led 2-0 through goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez before Palmeiras staged a late comeback to equalise.
Despite surrendering the lead, the draw was enough to send both teams through to the Club World Cup’s last 16.
Miami now face Messi’s former club PSG in Atlanta, while Palmeiras will take on fellow Brazilian side Botafogo in the next round.
Messi, who turns 38 on Tuesday, hasn’t faced PSG since leaving them in 2023 to join the MLS club.

Palmeiras struck late through Paulinho and Mauricio, dashing Miami’s hopes of avoiding PSG by finishing top of the group.
Coach Javier Mascherano hailed the achievement: “It’s a historic night. MLS should be proud. We played with heart and real football.”
