Martin Odegaard Responds After Arsenal Legend Calls For Declan Rice To Be Captain

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has brushed off Tony Adams’ suggestion that he should be replaced by Declan Rice.

Adams, who captained the Gunners to four league titles, argued last month that Rice was better suited to the role.

Speaking at an event, the Arsenal legend said Rice “will play every game and lay foundations for a title-winning team.”

The comments sparked debate among fans, with some agreeing while others defended Odegaard’s leadership in recent seasons.

But Odegaard, speaking on international duty with Norway, made it clear that he is not fazed by the criticism.

Odegaard Stands Firm As Captain

“I don’t care that much,” Odegaard said when asked about Adams’ remarks. “Everyone can have their own opinion.”

The 25-year-old stressed that he has learned to block out outside noise throughout his professional career in football.

“There will always be positive and negative things. It’s important to just ignore it and focus,” he explained.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta recently revealed the players themselves voted Odegaard captain for the 2025 season.

According to the Spaniard, Odegaard won the ballot “by a mile,” showing the squad’s overwhelming faith in him.

“It’s the clearest sign you can have,” Arteta said. “The players chose Martin to lead and represent them.”

Odegaard confirmed the vote took place and admitted it was “special” to receive such strong support from his teammates.

The Norwegian midfielder will now aim to silence any doubts with his performances in Arsenal’s title pursuit this season, reports Standard.
