Premier League icon Alan Shearer has slammed Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford after the former Newcastle striker warned that he ‘can’t be unprofessional’. Over the weekend, reports surfaced that the 27-year-old had been demoted to the Barcelona bench due to his lateness for a team meeting.
The punishment from Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick came just days after Rashford scored a match-winning brace against Newcastle in the Champions League. The two goals were the forward’s first since his high-profile summer move from United to the La Liga heavyweights.

Despite being banished to the bench for Getafe’s visit, the forward came on to set up Dani Olmo for the 3-0 win on Sunday. Rashford joined a Champions League club during the summer transfer window after Aston Villa declined to exercise the purchase option in his contract.
A similar option exists in his Barcelona contract that may permanently end his relationship with United after progressing through the junior system as an academy product. The Daily Star reported this week that Barcelona wants to make Rashford’s stay permanent in a £26 million agreement with United.
nevertheless Shearer has warned that a lack of professionalism will not be tolerated at clubs of the Catalans’ calibre. According to the Manchester Evening News, the former England star has joined the chorus of commentators who have weighed in on Rashford following Paul Scholes’ remarks earlier this week.
“Rashford can’t be unprofessional, it’s not right,” Shearer told Betfair. “We know that if Rashford is prepared and has the correct mindset, there is a player in there.
“He was outstanding against Newcastle. The second finish in particular was incredible. But you cannot be unprofessional.
