Luka Modric, the most decorated player in Real Madrid history, has agreed to leave the club following this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.
Modric, 39, will leave after a “unforgettable time as a player at our club,” Real Madrid announced on Thursday.
Madrid will pay tribute to the Croatian playmaker in their season-ending La Liga encounter against Real Sociedad on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The Club World Cup begins in mid-June in the United States.
“The moment has arrived,” Modric wrote on social media. “I never wanted to be here, but that is football, and everything in life has a beginning and an end. On Saturday, I’ll play my last game at the Santiago Bernabeu.”
Modric joined Madrid in 2012 and played a major role during one of the club’s most successful seasons.

“Real Madrid wishes to express its immense gratitude and appreciation for a player who has become a true legend both of our club and world football,” according to a statement.
Modric helped Real Madrid win 28 championships over 13 seasons, including six UEFA Champions League wins, six Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four Spanish La Liga titles, two Copas del Rey. Reported by News cgtn.
“Luka Modric will forever remain in the hearts of all ‘Madridistas’ (Madrid fans) as a unique and exemplary footballer who has always embodied the values of Real Madrid,” the president of the club, Florentino Perez, stated. “His football has caught the imagination of madridistas and fans around the world. “His legacy will last forever.”
The Croatian midfielder has made 590 Real Madrid appearances, ranking ninth all-time, and scored 43 goals. He had been playing fewer minutes in recent years under coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Modric is one of only five players who have won the Champions League six times.
