Liverpool’s Marc Guehi Transfer Alternative ‘Open’ To Move Ahead Of January

Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan is apparently being considered as an alternative defensive transfer target to Marc Guehi by Liverpool.

Liverpool attempted to recruit Guehi this summer, even reaching an agreement with Crystal Palace for the defender, only for the London club to back out at the last minute. Palace manager Oliver Glasner did not want to transfer Guehi because he believed the England defender’s departure would leave his club short at the back.

Guehi appears ready to depart Palace for free when his contract expires at the end of the season, and Liverpool is anticipated to compete fiercely for his services.

Liverpool effectively had a free run with Guehi earlier this year, but numerous major European teams would undoubtedly see him as an intriguing option on a free transfer in 2026.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool is considering Bastoni as a potential replacement for Guehi, but Guehi is still the Reds’ top pick.

Liverpool is currently low on options in the middle of defense, with the collapse of Guehi’s move, along with Giovanni Leoni’s long-term knee injury, leaving the squad with only three senior center-backs.

These three players are Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez, all of whom have uncertain futures.

Van Dijk turns 35 next summer, Konate becomes a free agent next year, and Liverpool was willing to sell Gomez in each of Arne Slot’s summers in charge.

Liverpool is now short on options in the middle of defense, with the failure of Guehi’s transfer and Giovanni Leoni’s long-term knee injury leaving the club with only three senior center-backs.

These three players, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez, all face unclear futures.
