When Liverpool won against Eintracht Frankfurt in midweek, fans felt they had turned a corner after a string of losses. Unfortunately, they were dragged crashing down to earth away at Brentford on Saturday.
As Arne Slot’s side trounced their Bundesliga opponents 5-1 in Germany, Frankfurt manager Dino Toppmoller was left cursing a number of his former players. While Hugo Ekitike scored in his return to his old club, Ibrahima Konate and Dominik Szoboszlai also scored against their former RB Leipzig assistant coach.
On Saturday evening, however, Liverpool faced a number of familiar faces in the capital.
And, while no former Reds scored for Brentford, they all contributed to the Bees’ 3-2 victory.

Jordan Henderson sparkled in midfield against his former team as he faced Liverpool for the first time since departing in 2023, while Caoimhin Kelleher made many saves in his first meeting with his former employers since leaving Anfield in the summer.
Meanwhile, Sepp van den Berg impressed in the heart of defence, producing a crucial block to deny Mohamed Salah from close range in particular before guiding Keith Andrews’ team to a 3-2 victory.
The Dutchman only made four appearances for Liverpool after joining for £1.3 million in the summer of 2019, but has gone on to excel for Brentford, following successful loans in the Championship and Bundesliga, since coming to the capital in a move for up to £25 million last year.
“I got a tap on my shoulder,” Van den Berg told the Guardian, recalling how he ran into Slot in Zwolle ahead of his new head coach’s first preseason at Liverpool. “I was a little surprised. And perhaps that was a touch awkward.
