Liverpool has beaten Arsenal in the race to sign Salford City prodigy Will Wright, just as they did in 2010 when they signed a prominent Arsenal target.
The 17-year-old striker seemed ready to join north London in a £200,000 move after scoring over 50 goals at underage level last season.
But the Reds have won a transfer for the teenager, who appeared three times for Salford’s senior side in the 2024/25 season, after agreeing on personal terms.
Liverpool has faced competition from Arsenal to sign a top target before, having done so 15 years ago with Joe Cole.
Cole was in high demand following his surprise release from Chelsea, where he helped the club win three Premier League titles.

In addition to Liverpool, Arsenal and c were interested in keeping Cole in London.
And he was expected to conclude a move to north London, where he scored twice during his first tenure at West Ham and seven years at Chelsea.
The Mirror stated that Cole would sign a three-year contract with the Emirates.
It was reported that Cole had agreed to a £90,000-a-week contract and will be announced after the 2010 World Cup, becoming Arsenal’s second signing of the summer after Marouane Chamakh.
Cole has been praised for his imaginative play and ability to dribble, pass, and score goals.
Cole would eventually sign a four-year contract at Anfield.
As luck would have it, his first Premier League match would be against the Gunners on Merseyside in the 2010/11 season opener.
What happened on Joe Cole’s Premier League debut for Liverpool?
Cole was named to the starting lineup for the game, his first Premier League appearance since April, after falling down the pecking order at Chelsea.
Cole’s top-flight debut ended up being memorable for all the wrong reasons.
He would not complete the half.
Cole received a straight red card in first-half stoppage time for a dangerous challenge on fellow debutant Laurent Koscielny.
