Steven Gerrard is on the shortlist to take over Rangers. If he does return to the hot seat for a second time, he will be charged with leading the Scottish club into a new era, as a takeover is now being finalized.

Gerrard, who was once linked with replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, has had a rocky few years. After periods with Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, the Liverpool legend’s managerial reputation has suffered.

The Saudi employment was always going to be difficult, as Gerrard managed one of the teams outside of the “big four” that get direct state investment. However, he was still able to attract former Liverpool stars Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum, having previously worked with Philippe Coutinho at Villa.

But it’s easy to forget how brilliantly he performed at Rangers, where he coached from 2018 to 2021. Those linkages back to Liverpool were not without merit, even if the predominant sentiment now is one of satisfaction with how things have turned out with Arne Slot.

According to the Mail, Rangers has put together a three-man list to replace Philippe Clement. Gerrard is up against former Southampton manager Russell Martin and Italian coach Davide Ancelotti, Carlo’s son who has worked as an assistant at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton, and Real Madrid.

The search is intensifying with the departure of temporary CEO Barry Ferguson. It is thought to be in its last stages
