Liverpool Champions League Goalkeeper Flop Admits ‘Shock’ Following Alisson Transfer

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has revealed he was stunned by Alisson Becker’s £65m Anfield transfer.

The Reds shattered the world record goalkeeper fee in 2018 by signing Alisson from Roma.

Karius admitted he only discovered Liverpool’s transfer plans after reading reports in the media.

He said nobody at the club warned him beforehand about the imminent arrival of the Brazilian.

Jurgen Klopp pushed ahead with the move following concerns over Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation.

Those worries intensified after Karius’ high-profile errors in the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

The German goalkeeper made two costly mistakes as Liverpool lost 3-1 in Kyiv.

Karius reflects on Liverpool exit and Alisson arrival

Karius never played another competitive match for Liverpool after that final defeat.

He later spent time on loan at Besiktas and Union Berlin before leaving Anfield in 2022.

Speaking to the Independent, Karius said the transfer announcement completely caught him off guard.

He explained that learning about Alisson through the news was difficult but accepted football realities.

Liverpool reportedly told Karius they could not inform every player about transfer decisions.

Despite the disappointment, Karius insists there is no bad blood toward Alisson, reports Mirror.

He praised the Brazilian for performing brilliantly and becoming a key figure for Liverpool.

Karius admitted earlier communication might have helped him prepare mentally for the situation.

After leaving Liverpool, Karius briefly considered quitting football altogether.

He eventually rebuilt his career with Schalke and hopes to help the club return to Bundesliga.
