Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has suggested that Xabi Alonso is not receiving enough institutional support at Real Madrid, drawing a sharp contrast with the environment the Spanish coach previously enjoyed in Germany.
Speaking to Sky, Carro reflected on Alonso’s current situation at the Bernabéu, stressing that the former Leverkusen boss is operating under far greater pressure.
According to Carro, the political backing and unity that defined Alonso’s time in Leverkusen are noticeably absent in Madrid.

The Leverkusen chief pointed to comments from Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, who recently described coaches as a “necessary evil”, suggesting that such an outlook leaves managers exposed when results falter.
Carro implied that Alonso has become the focal point for criticism, rather than being protected by the club hierarchy.
Strong Relationship Remains Between Carro and Alonso
Carro emphasised that Alonso’s situation in Madrid is vastly different from his time at Leverkusen, where the entire club structure worked in alignment.
He noted that in Germany, the coach was never isolated or left to face pressure alone, politically or publicly.
Despite Alonso’s departure, Carro revealed that the pair remain close on a personal level.
During the most recent international break, the Leverkusen CEO spent time with Alonso, his coaching staff and family in Madrid, describing their bond as one forged over three years of shared success.
“We were like a family,” Carro said, underlining the trust and unity that defined Alonso’s spell in charge of Leverkusen, reports Managing Madrid.
While Carro stopped short of directly criticising Real Madrid, his remarks suggest concern that Alonso is navigating a far less forgiving environment.
With scrutiny intensifying in Spain, the contrast with his protected, supportive role in Germany could prove significant as the season progresses.
