Laporta Explains Reasons For Barcelona’s Withdrawal From Super League

FC Barcelona formally declared their withdrawal from the European Super League project last week.

The Blaugrana were one of the final two teams affiliated to the renegade league, which was led by Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid.

But the Catalans’ decision to abandon the Super League project entirely was made possible by their escalating conflicts with Los Blancos and their concurrent reconciliation with UEFA and the EFC (formerly the ECA).

In an interview with the club’s media as reported by Barca Universal, Joan Laporta discussed the reasons for the decision to permanently leave the Super League and how it relates to Barcelona’s intentions to rejoin the EFC.

“Yes. First, we had to withdraw from the European Super League, and we did so because it was a project that had been falling apart and could no longer be implemented; it only represented expenses for us. There was no benefit,” he said.

Continuing on how it helped UEFA understand their concerns and change the Champions League format, he added: “It served as an experience with UEFA, allowing them to understand certain aspects of our approach. The competition format has been changing.

Regarding how the problematic relationship with Real Madrid also played a part, Laporta stated: “We also weren’t comfortable because our relationship with Real Madrid isn’t good, and it’s difficult to live with this constant discomfort.”
