Former Real Madrid Winger Reflects On His Time At The Club: ‘I Took Bale’s Place’

Former Real Madrid winger Jese Rodriguez recently spoke with AS on his time at the club.

Jese, who is 32 years old, played for Johor Darul Ta’zim in Malaysia during the 2024/25 season, winning two trophies.

When asked how he felt about his time in Madrid, Jese replied, “I really enjoyed it. The heavyweights were quite helpful to me.

“They were terrific players, and we also won championships. When you win trophies with the best team in the world, you experience emotions you’ve never felt before.”

When asked about his friendship with Cristiano Ronaldo, Jese stated, “We lost contact some time ago, but I’m sure that if we see each other or I write to him, we’ll talk.”

“Sergio Ramos, the Churu, is the one I still have the best relationship with.”

He also remembered the hilarious nicknames they shared. Ronaldo was referred to as the ‘bug’, and Jese as the ‘little bug’.

“That is true. He enjoyed it, and I did too. Cristiano phoned me every day (laughs). At the moment, I was competing against Bale. “One day he played, another day I played, until I was injured.”

Thoughts about Xabi Alonso and CWC

When asked if Xabi Alonso can thrive as a coach at Real Madrid, Jese responded, “The difficulty is that they demand results right now.

“You need to give folks time. It’s not that simple. Xabi uses a separate system and approaches.

“He also has to put his stamp on the heavyweights. “They must believe in him and give him time.”

Jese also expressed his thoughts on the Club World Cup, adding, “I watch a lot of football; I enjoy it. You can never count out Real Madrid, but there are likely other stronger teams.

“I hope they win.” Keep in mind that the players are coming off a long season, it’s hot, and their schedules are complicated. It is not easy to play. “I enjoy the competition.

Finally, when asked if he felt disrespectful for not meeting the expectations placed on him, Jese replied honestly, “I think it’s divided. Some people appreciate me, while others do not. I’ve felt both rudeness and appreciation.

“Those who know me understand who I am as a player and as a person, and the others do not keep me awake at night.

“Each player has their own career. I haven’t changed because I scored 15 goals and replaced Bale, or because I’m in a different position now… “I’m the same,” he explained.
