Former PSG Boss Reveals Real Madrid Opportunity Came Both As Player And Manager

Mauricio Pochettino, the former manager of Chelsea, PSG, and Tottenham Hotspur, has acknowledged that he was on the verge of becoming the coach of Real Madrid while he was in the Premier League.

Although the opportunity was genuine, the move did not happen, according to the Argentine, who is currently in charge of the United States national team.

Pochettino is currently going through his first adventure as an international coach, following well-publicized periods in England and France.

The former Spurs manager reflected on times in his career when Real Madrid expressed a genuine desire in hiring him despite this new beginning.

Regarding his close ties to Real Madrid as a coach and player, Pochettino said El Chiringuito TV,

“I had the opportunity as a player, but it didn’t work out. I had a few opportunities as a coach, but these are the things that happen in football sometimes.

What time did it occur?

The 53-year-old continued by saying that Zinedine Zidane’s departure from Real Madrid made the chance to coach the team more tangible.

When Pochettino was in charge of Tottenham Hotspur at the time, he had just promised chairman Daniel Levy that he would stay with the team until their new stadium opened.

How Florentino Perez handled it is unknown to me. I have nothing to do with it. I didn’t have a contract.

Pochettino made it apparent that the timing of the transfer was just wrong by saying, “But it’s never too late if the joy is worth it.”

Even if the Madrid position fell through that time, Pochettino’s remarks imply he is still open to a future in the Spanish city.

The Argentine has left the door open, indicating that he would be open to taking on the job of managing one of the top teams in international football if the chance arose again.
