Former International Football Player Dies After Collapsing

Belgian football legend Glen De Boeck has died at the age of 54.

De Boeck received 36 caps for Belgium during his illustrious career before suffering a catastrophic brain hemorrhage that left him in a coma for three days.

The Anderlecht legend collapsed at home on Friday and was taken to Antwerp University Hospital. Sadly, he was unable to recover from the damage.

According to the Daily Star, the former defender died Wednesday night in the company of his loved ones. Bo and Caro, his two daughters, survive him.

Before joining Mechelen, De Boeck began his career with FC Boom, his hometown team. The defender was signed by Belgian powerhouse Anderlecht in 1995, where he led the team for ten years before retiring in 2005 due to a severe knee injury.

He got his managerial job at Cercle Brugge for three years before taking over at Germinal Beerschot,. After managing VVV-Venlo in the Netherlands, De Boeck returned to Belgium to oversee Beveren, Mouscron, KV Kortrijk, and Lokeren.

In 2023, he returned to Belgian Pro League team Kortrijk for his last management position. After that, he rose to prominence as a pundit on Belgian television.

A terrible year of personal loss has befallen the De Boeck family. Earlier this year, Glen lost his 80-year-old father, Louis, following a protracted illness.

Louisette, De Boeck’s mother, collapsed from a brain hemorrhage at his funeral. She tragically passed within a month after her spouse when doctors found out she had pancreatic cancer as well.
