Former Chelsea Manager Undergoes Heart Surgery

Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has undergone successful heart surgery, with Lazio providing a positive update on the Italian coach’s condition.

The 66-year-old is currently in charge of Serie A side Lazio and had been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm disorder that can cause irregular heartbeat and discomfort.

Reports in Italy suggest the procedure had been planned in advance, allowing Sarri to address the issue without urgency during the season.

Lazio confirmed that Sarri underwent transcatheter ablation surgery at the Policlinico Tor Vergata in Rome, a specialised procedure designed to correct faulty electrical signals in the heart.

The operation was carried out using PFA technology and was led by Professor Andrea Natale, a globally respected expert with more than 30 years of experience.

Club officials also confirmed that Lazio team doctor Italo Leo was present during the procedure, which was described as fully successful.

Sarri is expected to remain under observation for around 24 hours before being discharged from hospital.

The Italian coach will miss a short period of training, with assistant Marco Ianni overseeing sessions in the meantime.

Lazio added that Sarri is expected to resume full duties within the next few days, depending on his recovery.

Lazio provide reassurance after Sarri surgery

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Sarri is likely to miss three days of training but could return to the touchline as early as Friday.

There is even a chance he could take charge of Lazio’s upcoming Serie A match against his former club Napoli on Sunday.

Sarri is currently in his second spell at Lazio, having rejoined the club in the summer following a 15-month absence.

Under his guidance this season, Lazio sit eighth in Serie A after recording six wins, six draws and five defeats, reports Daily Mail.

The veteran coach is best known in England for his time at Chelsea, where he guided the Blues to Europa League glory in 2019.

He later added a Serie A title to his honours while in charge of Juventus, further cementing his reputation at the top level.

Lazio supporters will now hope Sarri’s swift recovery allows him to continue leading the club’s push up the table.
