Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool ‘Advancing In Talks’ To Sign ‘Lightning-Fast’ Star

Liverpool are in advanced talks to recruit Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Premier League winners are apparently making headway on a deal after meeting with the ‘lightning-fast’ Dutch international last week, who was mentioned as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool has now asked Leverkusen to examine the structure of Frimpong’s €35 million (£30 million) release clause, and they are also thought to be in negotiations with the player.

According to Romano, Frimpong is interested in moving to Merseyside this summer and might join Arne Slot at Anfield.

Frimpong is now set to become Liverpool’s first summer signing in what is expected to be a busy period for Slot and the Anfield management.

The Reds are expected to add many players to their title-winning squad, including a new number nine, with Darwin Nunez’s future at the club uncertain.

Frimpong emerged as a Liverpool target immediately after Alexander-Arnold announced his departure from Anfield at the conclusion of the season.

The English right-back has decided to join Real Madrid on a free transfer when his contract expires in June, ending his nine-year career with the first squad.

While there has been speculation that Conor Bradley may take his place in Slot’s first XI, Liverpool now appear to be looking for a more experienced option in Frimpong.

During his time at Leverkusen, the Dutch international has grown into one of the world’s top wing-backs, helping the German club win its first Bundesliga title last season.

Frimpong has made 48 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring five goals and assisting 12 times, including five in the Champions League.
