Ruben Amorim has been warned that he will have “no more excuses” at Manchester United next season after a successful transfer window and preseason.
The Portuguese manager replaced Erik ten Hag in November of last year, but the team did not benefit from any new manager bounce and, in fact, regressed as they finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest ever finish.
It means no European football at Old Trafford, but despite the awful run of defeats, there were others who pointed out that Amorim had not spent much time with his players on the training pitch and was working with a group he had inherited.

Those disappointments were exacerbated by Amorim’s use of a peculiar 3-4-3 system, for which he lacked the necessary players but persisted in his views. Ashley Young believes now is the time for the manager to make an early statement and establish he is the right guy to lead the team forward.
All of the justifications used last term are no longer valid, and the ex-United man expects to see significant progress over last year.
He told Sky Sports: “I believe Ruben Amorim has gotten his way, with his coaching style, tactics, and setup. He did not want to come in when he did; he preferred to come in at the beginning of the season. So it was going to be challenging either way; coming in halfway through a season is a difficult task.
“I think it has been said you’ll have to give him time, how many transfer window? Who knows. You’ve got to set your marker as soon as you start this season.
