Eto’o Hit With Four-Match Ban For AFCON Misconduct

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended Samuel Eto’o, President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), for four games due to alleged misconduct during Cameroon’s 2-0 loss to hosts Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) last Friday.

Eto’o allegedly made an irate gesture against refereeing decisions in front of CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

CAF opened investigations into violent altercations during AFCON games following a brawl between players from both teams.

According to The Independent, Eto’o was fined $20,000 by the CAF disciplinary board, a decision that FECAFOOT promptly denounced as “lacking any explicit justification.”

FECAFOOT said on Thursday that “the expedited procedure leading to this decision raises serious concerns regarding the fundamental requirements of a fair process,” adding it would appeal.

The federation reiterated its “support for its president and its commitment to respecting the principles governing credible disciplinary justice.”

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between hosts Morocco and Senegal will take place on Sunday.

Eto’o’s Career As A Footballer

With 18 goals in the competition, Eto’o is the record goalscorer in Afcon history and is considered by many to be one of the best African football players of all time.

In addition to winning two Afcon titles as a player in 2000 and 2002, Eto’o won an Olympic gold medal with Cameroon in the 2000 Sydney Games.

Eto’o earned 118 caps and 56 goals for Cameroon before declaring his retirement from international competition in August 2014.

The former striker also had a successful club career, playing for some of the top football teams in Europe.

He won the Champions League twice with Barcelona before joining the Inter Milan team that won a historic Treble in 2010.
