Erik ten Hag was brutally humiliated by Bayer Leverkusen’s personnel, who labelled him one of their worst managers in the last two decades before his stunning dismissal by the Bundesliga club.
The former Manchester United manager was given only three games to lead Leverkusen before being fired. Ten Hag reportedly argued with the boardroom leadership over transfer issues and the club’s future orientation, with sports director Simon Rolfes admitting that authorities could no longer see the relationship succeeding.
Ten Hag had succeeded the successful Xabi Alonso in the summer after he moved to Real Madrid, but a difficult pre-season period saw many notable players leave, including Florian Wirtz, Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong, Piero Hincapie, and Granit Xhaka.

Despite overseeing the whole pre-season preparations, the Dutchman labeled his players as lacking fitness after a disastrous first two Bundesliga games. In his debut, he lost 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim and managed only a 3-3 draw against ten-man Werder Bremen despite leading by two goals.
According to Bild, seasoned staff members mocked Ten Hag by naming him one of the club’s worst managers. According to the publication, the former Ajax manager was “in a top ranking for the overall package”.
Given the club’s antipathy toward Ten Hag, the report argues that Leverkusen may have “perhaps waited too long” to terminate him. Ten Hag’s warning indicators were there from the start, according to the report.
The manager had “failed to convey any ideas” to the squad, and “no one knew what to do” despite leading 3-1 against Werder Bremen.
