Erik ten Hag, the former head coach of Manchester United, is preparing to return to management after a three-month hiatus and he might take over as Borussia Dortmund’s manager in place of a sacked former Liverpool midfielder.

Dortmund sacked Nuri Sahin, and despite being just three points outside of Germany’s European spots, Jurgen Klopp’s former squad is currently in 10th place in the Bundesliga standings.

Sahin’s last Champions League match saw Dortmund lose 2-1 to Bologna, but they will still advance to the play-off round.

The 36-year-old Sahin’s success as a coach at Antalyaspor in Turkey helped him land the Dortmund position in the summer.

After just 12 victories in 27 games, he was stripped of his responsibilities.

Sahin added, “Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season,” in a statement issued by the team.

“I wish this special club all the best.”

After Real Madrid loaned Sahin to Liverpool in 2012, Brendan Rodgers never got the most out of him.

He transitioned into management, first as Dortmund’s assistant coach the previous season before taking over full-time after Edin Terzic left. According to Sky Germany, Erik Ten Hag is a strong contender to succeed Sahin, according to Liverpool.
