Enzo Maresca Looking To Extend Startling Unwanted Streak For Jose Mourinho’s Side In Champions League Game

Chelsea  want to add to Benfica’s stunning statistic when they play in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The match at Stamford Bridge is getting a lot of attention as Jose Mourinho makes only his eighth appearance since his first of two departures in September 2007.

Enzo Maresca appears to be under little pressure from the Blues’ hierarchy, but the Italian appreciates the importance of ending a record of only one win in five games across all competitions.

On matchday one of this competition, both clubs suffered defeats, with Chelsea losing to Bayern Munich and Benfica losing a two-goal lead at home to Qarabag FK.

What Benfica streak does Chelsea hope to extend?

Benfica defeated Everton 2-0 in the Europa League in November of that year, and they have faced English opposition in 18 games since. Reported By Sport Mole News.

However, the Portuguese giants have failed to keep a single clean sheet in that time frame, and it has been eight games since they last defeated a Premier League team in a competitive fixture.

Their most recent victory over such a squad occurred in the 2013-14 Europa League, when they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at White Hart Lane.

Furthermore, Chelsea has won all four games against Benfica, including the Champions League, Europa League, and Club World Cup.

Surprisingly, Chelsea and Benfica have never met in the group or league stages of a championship.

Having said that, Benfica can only be buoyed by Chelsea’s longest-ever Champions League losing streak, which now stands at three matches following defeats against Real Madrid (twice) and Bayern.

When was the last time Chelsea faced Portuguese competition other than Benfica?

Chelsea has played up to 16 competitive matches against Portuguese clubs over the years, although the last time they met anyone other than Benfica was in 2020-21.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, both legs of the Champions League quarter-finals vs Porto would be played in Seville.

Chelsea won 2-1 on aggregate, scoring twice in the first game before holding on late in the second leg to accept a 1-0 defeat.

A Portuguese team has not played at Stamford Bridge since Chelsea defeated Porto, 2-0, in the last group game in December 2015.
