Eberechi Eze was meant to be taking it easy the week before taking over the north London derby and electrifying the game. The 27-year-old had been offered two days off after his international duty with England, but he insisted on returning to Arsenal’s London Colney training site after only one. “He wants to learn,” Mikel Arteta said, beaming.
The Arsenal staff has been quite enthused about Eze’s development, but reports from the training ground over the last two months have indicated that he has been a little “tight” in his play. In other words, he has not yet felt completely at ease in his post.
Another problem for Eze was that at Crystal Palace, he was used to being free to enjoy himself as a playmaker without being constrained in the same way. He was the man.
Arteta’s staff believes that at this level, you must be extremely efficient with attacking touches. Otherwise, unnecessary giveaways “let down the team structure”.
