Chelsea Walk Away From Deal To Sign Maignan

Chelsea have reportedly ended their pursuit of AC Milan goalkeeper, Mike Maignan.

The France international was offered to the Blues, who estimated his value to be between €10 million (£8.46 million) and €15 million (£12.7 million).

However according to Sky Sports, Chelsea never formally made a proposal for the 29-year-old, and they wouldn’t entertain paying more than their valuation for a player with only one year remaining on his AC Milan contract.

Maignan’s possible presence at Stamford Bridge would have caused the goalkeeping department to undergo yet another change.

It is now improbable that Chelsea will recruit a goalkeeper this summer, as they already have five goalkeepers on their roster: Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, Mike Penders, and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Prior to receiving Maignan’s offer, the Premier League team were not considering signing for the role.

The 29-year-old moved from Lille to AC Milan in 2021.

He helped Milan win the Serie A championship in 2022 and the Supercoppa Italiana in 2024 after winning the Ligue 1 title with Lille in 2021.

Maignan was selected for the tournament’s Euro 2024 squad and has made 32 appearances for France.

Sky Sports News chief correspondent Kaveh Solhekol revealed the situation of the deal: “Chelsea were trying to sign Maignan, but they were always insistent they did not think he was worth more than £12.7m.

“The player himself was desperate to move to Chelsea, he is 30 in July, is out of contract next summer and told Milan he will not sign a new deal.

“However, Milan said we will not let him leave for the figure Chelsea wanted.”
