Carrick Issues Update On Man United Star As World Cup Hopes At Risk

Michael Carrick, the interim manager of Manchester United, has reportedly revealed that he had no idea when centre-back Matthijs de Ligt will return.

The Dutch defender has been out since the beginning of December due to a back problem that former United head coach Ruben Amorim first regarded as a minor issue.

Prior to the game against West Ham on December 4, De Ligt’s season came to an abrupt end after he had started the Red Devils’ first 13 games.

Four days later, the 26-year-old was supposed to return for the match against Wolves, but four months later, the defender has not returned to the team.

Carrick Not Sure When De Ligt Will Return

According to talkSPORT, when asked whether the former Juventus and Bayern Munich centre-back would return to action before the end of the season, Carrick admitted he had no idea of when De Ligt would be fit enough to resume playing.

“It’s difficult to say, just because it’s taken that much time,” Carrick said.

“With backs sometimes you think it’s all right and all of a sudden it’s not quite right.

“We’re just being patient and working through it. We’ll give him time and try to get him back as quickly as we can, but it’s really difficult to say.”

The Netherlands is especially concerned about the news in light of the World Cup this summer.

Ronald Koeman, the manager of the national team, selected De Ligt for the September and November international break.
