Carragher Blasts Barcelona Captain Following Sevilla defeat

Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher reportedly slammed Ronald Araujo for his dismal performance in Barcelona’s 4-1 defeat to Sevilla and urged the club to part ways with the Uruguayan.

The Uruguay international started in defence for the Blaugrana on Sunday afternoon at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and ended up having an awful match.

Araujo appeared shaken for the most part after giving up the penalty that gave Sevilla the lead early in the game, and Hansi Flick replaced him at halftime.

Carragher criticizes Araujo’s Display.

The former England international targeted Araujo, blaming him for failing in crucial games and called on Barcelona to let him go.

“Every time Barça faces an elite opponent, he switches off and that is costing them dearly. If Barça want to do well, they must sell him with complete confidence,” Carragher said on Sky Sports as echoed by Barca Universal.

Carragher went further, dissecting what he sees as Araujo’s recurring flaws, as he said: “I like the attitude Araujo brings to games, but there comes a point where passion is not enough. Defending at this level is about decision-making, not just tackling.

“And that’s where Araujo has a deficit that ends up hurting his team at decisive moments and games in the season.”

Carragher’s criticism of Araujo is not new. He was especially critical following the center-back’s red card against PSG in 2023/24.

The Liverpool legend claims Barca lack a center-back with the composure and positional soundness of Inigo Martinez, whose exit has obviously created a hole in the defensive line.

Hansi Flick has kept switching up his back line this season, and the most reliable duo at the moment appears to be Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia.
