Barcelona President Confirms Progress In Key Midfielder’s Contract Renewal

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has reportedly confirmed that the club are on track over the contract renewal of Frenkie de Jong.

The club and the Dutch midfielder seem eager to continue their relationship, and the player’s current contract expires in 2026.

According to Barca Universal, while speaking at a Ronald Koeman-hosted charity golf game, Laporta covered a range of current issues. The state of talks with De Jong was one of them.

“It is on the right track,” said Laporta when asked about the contract renewal.

“We want Frenkie to be here for many years. He’s a key player on the team, as
Ronald rightly says,” he added, picking up on comments made moments earlier by Koeman.

Koeman also affirmed that the player’s desire is to continue at the club, saying: “I hope he stays. He wants to, and I know he is very happy at Barça and wants to remain here. I do not see any major issue.”

Laporta also talked on the recent changes made to Spain’s refereeing system, including the firing of senior officials from the Technical Committee of Referees by Rafael Louzan, the head of the Spanish Football Federation.

The president of Barcelona stated that he fully supports the modifications.

“It does not concern me. I have full confidence in President Louzan and that things will be done as they should be,” he stated.

“These changes have been discussed for a while regarding the restructuring of the CTA. I do not know the full details of the reasons, although the president has provided some explanations.”
