Arteta, Enrique Clash Following Arsenal’s Champions League Exit

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta and Paris Saint-Germain boss, Luis Enrique were caught up in a war of words following the former’s exit in the hands of the latter in the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League.

In the first leg of the semi-final, Arteta’s team lost 1-0 at Emirates Stadium. They were unable to overcome that deficit in the second leg in Paris, and a 2-1 loss with an aggregate score of 3-1 eliminated them from the competition and ultimately guaranteed that they would finish another season without winning any major trophy.

According to 90min, Arteta came out firing after the game, claiming that no team this season came close to matching Arsenal’s level in the Champions League, despite the heartbreaking loss.

What Did Both Managers Say After The Match?

“I don’t think there’s been a better team in the competition from what I’ve seen,” Arteta told TNT Sports.

During his post-match conference, Arteta even went as far to say after the game, PSG’s bench acknowledged the Gunners were superior to them.

“I am saying that because [PSG] just told me that,” he said when asked if he was sticking to his claim that the best team had lost. “Today, I see how much my players wanted it because they were in tears.”

Several well-known people took issue with Arteta’s remarks, including Luis Enrique, the manager of PSG, who was one of the first to cast doubt on the Arsenal manager’s assertions.

“I don’t agree at all,” said Enrique. “Mikel Arteta is a great friend, but I don’t agree at all.

“They played in a clever way, but in the two legs we scored more than them and that is the most important thing in football. Arsenal played a great match, and we suffered, but we deserved to get to the final.”
