A Champions League rule change next season is expected to have an influence on the tournament’s clubs, particularly Arsenal and Liverpool if they qualify again. The Champions League’s revised format has divided supporters since its debut at the beginning of last season, with detractors grumbling about numerous fixtures while advocates stress the point of ‘greater jeopardy’.
However, the governing body UEFA has already agreed to make modifications to Europe’s best club championship. Beginning with the 2026/27 season, the initial league phase draw will not allow any fixture between the same two teams to be repeated for three consecutive seasons.

This will only apply if the same side is playing at home for the match. For example, UEFA’s algorithms conducting the group phase draw will not allow Liverpool versus Real Madrid at Anfield and Inter Milan vs Arsenal at San Siro to be played a third time. Reported By Mirror News.
Liverpool defeated Real Madrid 2-0 in 2024 and 1-0 in 2025 at Anfield, while Arsenal lost 1-0 to Inter in 2024 before winning 3-1 earlier this month. The changes, which mean they can only play each other in reversed matchups, were announced prior to the league phase draw at the start of this season.
This season, the winners of last season’s Champions League and Europa League, as well as the seven clubs who advanced from qualification, were chosen among 27 teams that qualified through league positions. The teams were then divided into four pots according to their specific UEFA coefficient rankings.
Arsenal and Liverpool have a realistic chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season. The Gunners are presently leading the standings with seven wins from seven matches as they enter the final league phase matchday.
