Alonso Decides On Real Madrid Star Who Almost Left In The Summer

Real Madrid have gotten off to a great start under Xabi Alonso after the Spaniard made very good use of his team in the first four games of the new season.

That continued in Saturday’s win over Real Sociedad, where midfielder Dani Ceballos made an unexpected start.

Ceballos had made brief appearances in victories over Osasuna, Real Oviedo, and Mallorca, but it was anticipated that he would not play a significant role in Alonso’s plans for the 2025–2026 campaign after nearly leaving the Santiago Bernabeu during the summer transfer window.

According to Diario AS as reported by Football Espana, the start in Donostia-San Sebastian has verified that he is indeed very much in the team.

Alonso Sees Ceballos As Big Option In Midfield

Alonso reportedly considers Ceballos a differential option to the rest of his midfielders, and he is a huge fan of the player.

Additionally, even though he did not start the season’s first three games, it is thought that if he performs well when called upon, he could secure a regular place in the lineup.

Ceballos stated in the summer that he wants to leave Real Madrid in order to get a consistent starting role elsewhere and increase his chances of making Luis de la Fuente’s 2026 World Cup squad.

He nearly accepted a move to Marseille, but he declined at the last second.

Given that he will be up against Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde, Arda Guler, Jude Bellingham, and Eduardo Camavinga, Ceballos will have a hard time starting for Madrid on a regular basis this season.

He could push himself higher in the ranks in the upcoming weeks, though, if he can repeat the form he had in patches last season, since Alonso has shown faith in him.
